Did you know that lighting accounts for 18 per cent of a typical household’s electricity bill?
Did you also know that you can start saving money with the flick of a switch?
It's true. You can cut your bill by making small changes such as swopping to energy efficient lighting and only having the lights on you actually need.
Homes typically use a mixture of standard light fittings, down lighters and spotlight fittings. Energy efficient lighting is becoming the norm as old, power-guzzling bulbs are phased out. Light bulb technology is developing at such a rapid pace there's a huge range of products suitable for a number of different fittings, these new bulbs have been designed to be functional or to produce an atmospheric effect.
Never has there been so much choice.

Which light bulbs are energy efficient?
There are two main types of energy efficient light bulbs available in the UK: Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) or LED Lighting
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)
CFLs are a cost-effective option for most general lighting requirements.
Replacing a traditional light bulb with a CFL of the same brightness will save you a few pounds every year. This grows to a substantial sum over the lifetime of the bulb.
They can use up to 80 per cent less electricity than equivalent traditional bulbs and can last as much as ten times longer.
CFLs come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colours and suitable both for functional lighting and to create atmosphere or background illumination. They are great as alternatives in standard domestic light fittings. Spotlight bulbs are available but can be relatively expensive.
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) or LED Lighting
LEDs fit into LED fittings as well as CFL fittings and are particularly good for replacing spotlights and dimmable lights. Though more expensive to buy initially, they are more efficient than CFLs and will save you more money in the long run. By replacing all halogen down lighters in your home with LED lighting alternatives, you could save about £30 a year on your electricity bill.
In summary LED like-for-like replacements for halogen down lighters are still relatively expensive but are the most efficient and pay for themselves several times over before they need replacing.
