The Shocking Rise in E-Bike Battery Fires – What You Need to Know

With more people swapping four wheels for two, the streets are buzzing with e-bikes & scooters.
They’re eco-friendly, cost-effective, and make short commutes a breeze. But behind the convenience lies a growing safety concern: e-bike battery fires caused by lithium-ion batteries.
At Juice Electrical Services, we’re always looking out for electrical safety. That’s why we’ve taken a closer look at the Battery Breakdown report from Electrical Safety First, and the findings are hard to ignore.
E-Bikes and E-Scooters – What’s the Risk?
Lithium-ion batteries power the e-mobility revolution, but they also pose a serious fire risk when things go wrong. These aren’t just small sparks—we’re talking about intense, fast-burning fires caused by something called “thermal runaway.” This happens when a fault inside the battery causes temperatures to rise uncontrollably, eventually leading to explosions or fierce fires that standard smoke alarms can’t keep up with.
The stats tell the story. In 2019, there were just 8 fires linked to these batteries. By 2022, that number had jumped to 87—and 2023 was on track for nearly one battery fire every single day. These fires have destroyed homes, caused injuries, and tragically, have even claimed lives.
Not All Batteries Are Created Equal
The report highlights that many of these incidents are tied to cheap or unregulated batteries, often ones bought online or installed as aftermarket replacements. One particular model, the UPP U004 and U004-1, has been identified in multiple serious incidents.
Just like we advise homeowners to steer clear of substandard electrical accessories, the same rule applies here. If it’s not tested, approved, or properly certified, it’s not worth the risk.
Where the Rules Fall Short
Unlike other consumer goods, e-bike batteries are not currently subject to the same rigorous safety standards. That means dangerous products are slipping through the cracks. Electrical Safety First is calling for tougher regulations, including:
- Mandatory third-party testing for batteries
- Stronger rules around online sales
- Clear guidance for recycling and disposal
We fully support these changes and urge our customers to stay informed about what they’re buying and where it’s coming from.
What You Can Do to Stay Safe
You don’t need to give up your e-bike or e-scooter to stay safe—just follow these key tips:
Dispose of old batteries properly—never in the household bin
Buy from reputable sellers and check for UKCA or CE safety markings
Charge in a safe place, away from sleeping areas
Never use damaged chargers or batteries
Don’t leave them charging unattended or overnight
Final Thoughts
Lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives, from phones to power tools and now to transport. But as with all electrical equipment, safety should always come first.
