Why a common childproofing gadget could be putting your family at risk

When it comes to making your home safer for young children, electrical sockets often top the list of concerns.

But here’s the reality: socket covers are not only unnecessary in UK homes — they could actually be making your sockets more dangerous.

In this blog, we’ll explain why socket covers should be avoided, and what you can do instead to keep your family safe.

Modern UK 13A plug sockets are among the safest in the world. They are designed to strict British Standards
(BS 1363) and feature built-in safety shutters that prevent access to live parts.

This means that unless the longer earth pin is inserted to open the shutter mechanism, the socket remains closed— even if a child tries to insert an object.

So far from being a danger, a standard UK socket is already child-resistant by design.

While socket covers are sold as child safety devices, they are not regulated or approved by any UK safety body.
In fact, research by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and other experts has shown that many socket covers:

  • Are incorrectly sized, damaging the socket or defeating its internal safety mechanism
  • Can open the protective shutters and leave live parts exposed
  • Are often easy for children to remove, exposing them to greater risk
  • Can be inserted upside down, making the socket even more hazardous

This means that adding a socket cover can actually bypass the built-in safety features of the socket, doing more harm than good.

You can read the full statement from the IET here, which clearly advises against their use in all UK installations.

The best approach is simple:

Don’t use socket covers. Trust in the safety of modern sockets and focus on proper supervision.

Here are a few safer alternatives:

  • Have your sockets professionally inspected, especially in older or rental properties
  • Educate your children about electrical safety from an early age
  • Use furniture placement to limit access to sockets in high-risk areas
  • Keep an eye on plug sockets to ensure they remain in good condition and are not overloaded

If you’re ever unsure about the safety of your electrical installation, it’s always worth speaking to a qualified electrician.
