Voltage Spikes Happen – Are You Protected?

When we think of electrical safety, most people picture RCDs, smoke alarms, or tidy consumer units.

But there’s one quiet hero in the background that can save your equipment, your business, and your bank balance: the Surge Protection Device.

An SPD is like a pressure valve for your electrical system. It protects your wiring and equipment from sudden voltage spikes – also known as surges – which can be caused by:

  • Nearby lightning strikes
  • Power outages or returning supply
  • Large electrical loads starting up or shutting down
  • Faults in the grid or local infrastructure

Without an SPD in place, these surges can fry sensitive electronics, trigger system failures, or even cause fire risks.

Here’s the thing: modern businesses and public spaces are packed with sensitive tech – computers, security systems, LED lighting, medical equipment, tills, comms gear, the list goes on.

A single surge can:

  • Knock out thousands of pounds’ worth of kit
  • Corrupt data
  • Disrupt service
  • And in some cases, lead to electrical fires

We’ve seen it happen. And it’s not pretty.

According to the latest 18th Edition Wiring Regs (BS 7671), SPDs are now a requirement in many installations, especially where:

  • Power loss could cause serious disruption or safety risks
  • There are valuable or sensitive electronics
  • You’re in a lightning-prone or exposed area
  • A new or replacement consumer unit is being installed

This applies to offices, shops, clinics, schools, community centres – the list is long.

Not sure if it affects you? We’re happy to advise.

Modern SPDs include visual indicators, but for proper peace of mind, they need to be tested.

At Juice, we use specialist equipment to confirm if your SPD is still functioning or if it’s time for a replacement.
This is a quick and non-invasive test that we can build into your regular inspection.

We don’t cut corners. Our process includes:

✅ Full site assessment
✅ Advice on compliance with BS 7671
✅ Supply & installation of high-quality SPDs
✅ Integration with new or existing consumer units
✅ Professional testing and certification

All work is carried out by our fully qualified, NICEIC-registered team and backed by our Trading Standards Approval.

An SPD is a small investment for serious peace of mind.

If a voltage surge fries your security system or takes out the lighting in your shop, the cost and hassle can be way higher than simply fitting the right protection from the start.
