Smoke and Heat Alarms

We all know the importance of smoke alarms to protect us, our properties and belongings. Government figures show people are four times more likely to die in a house fire if there is not a working smoke alarm.

Alarms can be used to detect smoke or heat. The warning siren they produce gives you the crucial time to safely evacuate and get help. An investment in an alarm will ensure your family and home are protected.

Fire and smoke damage to your home can cause huge disruption to family life. The loss of belongings can take time to replace and indeed many persons belonging can be irreplaceable.

Important information

The most commonly used smoke or heat alarms in domestic properties are mains powered alarms. They require a constant 230v supply but also have a battery backup. The supply can come from a designated circuit or a nearby lighting circuit.

Mains powered smoke and heat alarms should always be installed by a qualified electrician. This guarantees that your smoke alarm installation functions correctly and gives effective protection.

Legislation for Landlords

New legislation came into force in October 2015 for Private Landlords in England. The regulations regard smoke, heat and Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms.

Here is a summary of the legislation, passed through Parliament:

– There must be a working smoke alarm on every storey

– Alarms must be tested and working on the start of each tenancy
